October is around the corner!

October 5-9 Drive Safely Work Week!

Maryland has a clear, unified mission when it comes to traffic crashes – to move the state Toward Zero Deaths. There have been many strides made toward achieving this goal, but there have also been challenges that need to be faced in order to continue making progress. Traffic crashes are tragic, preventable occurrences and making the public realize this fact, in effect stigmatizing traffic crashes in the same manner as crime, is the only way to elevate the importance of traffic safety in the public eye.

Employers play a critical role in reaching out to the public, through educating employees and setting internal policies for things like seat belt use and preventing distracted or aggressive driving. Drive Safely Work Week (DSWW) is an annual workplace safety campaign, providing ways to remind employees about safe driving practices. The DSWW campaign has been sponsored by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) since 1996.

As a partner in Maryland’s traffic safety community, we ask that you use the resources included in the 2015 DSWW toolkit to help keep you and your employees safe on our roadways. You may access the resources through this link - http://trafficsafety.org/dsww2015/index.html. Although the observance of the campaign takes place each year during the first full week of October, the materials are not dated and can be used throughout the year for continued promotion of safe driving practices.

Thank you for your time and consideration and please contact the Maryland Highway Safety Office at 410-787-4050 with any questions.

Tips for Autumn and Daily Events

Good Afternoon New Carrollton,

Fall has began and we know that there are a lot of residents that enjoy exercising outdoors while the weather is cooler
NCPD would like to share some safety tips to help keep our residents safe.
So for those of you who prefer to run during the evening please be sure to read the safety tip below.....

Plan Your Route

In the dark, it may be increasingly difficult to determine where you are, or how to get back to where you started, if you find yourself in an unfamiliar area. Planning the route you will run ahead of time, or running a route you are already familiar with, will help you avoid the possibility of getting lost. Further, knowing the route, as well as the area, ensures that you are aware of any possible obstacles, such as potholes or poorly maintained roads, that may be harder to spot in the dark. Be sure the route you plan is not only familiar, but well lit. And lastly, inform a friend or family member of your route, as well as the estimated time you will return.

Visible Clothing

It is imperative for your safety, and that of others, that you are visible to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Be sure to not only wear brightly colored clothing, but to have plenty of reflective gear. Many running clothes combine brightly colored neon, sweat wicking, materials with reflective stickers and logos for increased visibility.

Reflective Safety Vest

Reflective safety vests are a lightweight option to layer over your clothing, giving you added visibility to passersby. In addition to vests, other products, such as reflective wrist and leg bands are also available. It may seem excessive to add even more reflective layers over your already bright clothing, but in the scenario of night running, it is better to be seen from far away than to risk the chance of not being seen at all by an oncoming motorist.

Headlamp

A quality headlamp designed for runners will benefit you two fold. First, it aids in alerting your presence to oncoming traffic. Second, it will light up the path in front of you, allowing you to see the path you are running on more clearly. If possible, find a headlamp that contains a bright front lamp, as well as a flashing rear lamp to wear on the back of the head, such as the, aiding in your visiblity to oncoming traffic. See:

Pepper Spray

Consider carrying a small running specific pepper spray. Unfortunately, most think of using pepper spray as personal protection against human attacks. While this danger may be present during your night run, a more likely situation may be an animal attack. Even typically non dangerous animals may be startled and provoked by your presence at night. Pepper spray is non-toxic and will not create lasting damage, but may be enough to halt an unexpected attack from a human or an animal.
